Remote Emergency Care
Level 5 - Expedition First Aid

This course is designed for expedition medics and group leaders working in remote locations. The course is highly practical and relies on a good pre-course medical understanding. Lay candidates require REC Advanced certificate or an equivalent qualification. Doctors, nurses and paramedics can enter the scheme directly at this level.

Expedition First Aider:

  • will be able to take control of an incident and direct basic first aiders
  • is able to deal with more complex problems in remote locations

Course content:

  • environment – hazards, cold, heat, chemicals, poisons, light, toxic substances
  • escort skills – vital signs, psychological trauma, monitoring, fluids, stretcher, splints, pain control
  • illness – chest pain, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, poisons, hyperventilation, mental disorders
  • scenarios – triage, incident management, emergency plans, action cards
  • expedition – dislocations, wound management, tropical diseases, gastric illnesses, altitude sickness.
